UK Self-Employed Self Assessment Calculator

England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This calculator uses Self Assessment style inputs and explains what each figure means in plain English.

How to use this calculator: enter the figures from your records for the tax year. If a box does not apply to you, leave it as 0.

This is most useful for sole traders and self-employed people who want help understanding the figures before completing a tax return.

Tip: if you are unsure about a field, read the helper text under it before entering a number.

Choose the tax year you are working on. Example: if you are filing a return for income earned between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026, choose 2025/26.
Enter your total business income before expenses. Example: if customers paid you £30,000 in total, enter 30000. Do not deduct expenses here.
Enter extra business income not included in your normal sales. Example: taxable grants, business insurance payouts, or other receipts connected to the business.
Enter the total of business expenses you are allowed to deduct. Example: materials, stock, office costs, software, business travel, phone and internet business use. Do not include personal spending.
Enter allowances claimed on assets such as equipment, tools, vans or machinery used in the business. Example: a laptop or work equipment that qualifies for Annual Investment Allowance. Leave as 0 if you are unsure or not claiming capital allowances.
Enter any balancing charge that must be added back to profits. Example: where an asset was sold and HMRC rules create a charge. Most simple businesses can leave this as 0.
Enter losses from earlier tax years that you are using against this year’s profits. Example: if you had a £2,000 unused trading loss from last year and are claiming it now, enter 2000.
Enter other income that also affects your tax bill. Example: employment income, property income or pension income. This helps estimate your full tax position, not just your self-employed profit.
Enter the gross amount, not just what left your bank. Example: if you paid £80 into a personal pension and the provider added £20 tax relief, enter 100.
Enter the gross Gift Aid amount. Example: if you donated £80 and the charity claimed £20 Gift Aid, enter 100.
For subcontractors in construction only. Enter tax already deducted from your payments under CIS. Example: if contractors deducted £1,500 during the year, enter 1500.
Enter tax already paid that should reduce the amount still due. Example: PAYE tax deducted from employment or other tax deducted at source. Do not enter the same figure again if it is already in CIS deductions.
Choose your student loan plan if you repay through Self Assessment. If you do not have a student loan, leave it as None. If you are unsure, check your Student Loans Company letters or online account.
Choose Yes only if you have a postgraduate loan that is repaid through Self Assessment. Most people can leave this as No.
Voluntary Class 2 can help protect your National Insurance record in some cases. Payments on account are advance payments towards your next tax bill and are often due if your tax bill is high enough.
